The book provides interesting information about mystical tribal groups called the Celts. They lived during a time period called Iron Age which is taken to have been extended from c. 1200 BC to c. 550 BC. Celts mostly lived in groups called tribes. Their bards told stories and poems. Druids were their priests and the Celts thought them to be wise men.
There have been preserved ruins of Celtic forts, one of the most famous of these is situated in Danebury in England. Mostly Celts grew crops and took care of animals. They were very good craftsmen, especially concerning metalwork. They forged very nice bracelets, gold collars, ornaments.
Celts lived mostly in Europe. But there were Greeks and Romans there too. Roman general Julius Caesar attacked the Celtic tribes in Gaul – that is now called France. For Vercingetorix – who was the leader of the Celtic tribes – was erected a memorial in Alesia that still stands today. He was mentioned in the Asterix comic book „Asterix and the Chieftain’s Shield“ as well.
The Celts never wrote anything about themselves. On the other hand Romans were interested in and wrote lots about them. There have been found objects belonging to the Celts, including some variety of funerary objects too. So there is at least some information about this interesting group of people speaking Celtic languages.
At the end of the book there is a glossary of some words mentioned in this book, index and websites to visit. It contains superb photos and pictures as well. The book is meant for children, but it is good for adults as well for learning English.
